Worst was the screen masterpiece. Sometimes an actor fits a role to such perfection that far more talented players cannot even begin to match them. Robert Newton’s Long John Silver, Charles Laughton’s Quasimodo, James Mason’s Captain Nemo, and Humphrey Bogart’s Sam Spade (or Phillip Marlowe) spring to mind, and, as is the case here, the remarkable Alistair Sim as Scrooge. I don’t think I’ve ever seen all of his performance. Even as I chose the above passages, I could not avoid an involuntary shudder.
