Now it was just about this time that I and the rest of my admittedly limited world discovered that I had been drafted, and everything changed. Well, not everything… In fact, nothing seemed to change at first—it was the way that everyone regarded me that became something new and strange. Personally, I didn’t know what to make of the matter, but everyone else I knew did. It was hard to pin down precisely what was different about their attitude—maybe that they tended to hang around a few moments longer that they did before, and somehow I sensed they each wanted to say something else but whatever it was, no one ever said it. In any case, what was certain was that the girls began to see me through new eyes.
The second great city circuit was even worse than the first. It was a fiercely hot night and Janie insisted that she be taken home first. No reason was given, but it was not something to be ignored.

Those Magnificent Men in their flying machines,
They go uppity up up, they go downity down down.
They enchant all the ladies and steal all the scenes.
Those magnificent men in their flying machines.

Not the funniest comedy ever made despite a colossal cast including great efforts by the eternally treacherous Terry-Thomas and insufferably pompous Prussian Gert Frobe, but the ancient aeroplanes dominated the people and they were just terrific. The film company bothered to build full-size flying replicas of all the pioneer planes including the Wright Flyer, put very heroic stunt pilots in them and flew them, filming them from more conventional aircraft. The stunning images of those old airborne rattletraps was awesome and made this one of the most enjoyable films ever made.
