Bonnie and Clyde thoroughly romanticised the story of the two Texas tear-aways, but if it was low on facts, it was big on film-making style and influence. Arthur Penn’s spectacular depiction of violence was to alter Hollywood for all time to come. Using two young glamorous stars, Warren Beatty and Fay Dunaway, the film combined comedy with ruthless bloodshed in a manner never seen before, but which would be frequently seen again. My personal favourite scenes are those bookending two robberies: their first when they have trouble getting the attention of the staff and customers and then bungle everything in a complete panic; and later, when the stroll in, neatly dressed, cool and calm and Clyde says politely, “Good afternoon, this is the Barrow Gang.” The film also introduced a chap named Gene Hackman...
